Description
Omega-3-acid Ethyl Esters (Prescription)
What It Is: Omega-3-acid ethyl esters are a prescription formulation of omega-3 fatty acids,
primarily EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), derived from fish oil.
This medication is FDA-approved to treat severely elevated triglyceride levels and is often prescribed alongside dietary changes.
It requires consultation and prescription from our medical providers.
Clinical Applications
- Inhibits hepatic triglyceride synthesis – reduces liver production of VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein), a major carrier of triglycerides
- Enhances triglyceride clearance – increases beta-oxidation and promotes breakdown of existing triglycerides
- Modulates lipid metabolism – may slightly increase HDL (good cholesterol) and have variable effects on LDL depending on baseline levels
- Exerts anti-inflammatory effects on the vascular endothelium
- May improve endothelial function and reduce platelet aggregation
- Beneficial for patients with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, or at high cardiovascular risk
